Did You Know …... CAFOD helps communities to prepare for natural disasters? Before Cyclone Sidr struck Bangladesh in 2007, Caritas Khulna trained a village disaster committee in Bagerhat to sound the alarm to warn of an oncoming natural disaster. Hours before Sidr struck, they evacuated people to a shelter holding 1,600. The cyclone lasted 7 hours. Homes were flattened but not one life was lost in this area - in fact, one life was added when a baby was born in the shelter! Similarly, CAFOD and its partners in Pakistan have helped communities with their disaster-preparedness, which God willing will have saved lives in the current flooding. www.cafod.org.uk. |
